Why We Work Safe – Photo Contest

SafetyPhotoContestENDOver 180 employees submitted 324 photos during August’s safety photo contest – Why We Work Safe! Employees were encouraged to show each other what it is that makes them work safely both on and off the job.

The photos represented family, friends and neighborhood gatherings, vacations, hobbies like boating, gardening, fishing, and hunting, and other events that drives them to work safely so they can go home at the end of each day.

The winners of the contest won an evening at a Twins game with a guest and Jim Malecha, Egan Company President & CEO, and Duane Hendricks, Egan Company Chief Operating Officer.

Multi-trade, in-house advantage

DSC_0183When it comes to Egan Company’s new Champlin facility, collaboration is the name of the game. With the consolidation of four metro offices into two – the new Champlin location and corporate office/shops in Brooklyn Park – more Egan employees are now able to work together under one roof. The result is improved production and work-flow; and the benefits are seen no better than in the renovation process itself, during which Egan was able to experience its own capabilities first-hand. The renovations began soon after the purchase of the building, starting in September 2015. By the end of the project, Egan had completed 75 to 80 percent of the retrofit in-house.

“We, as Egan, became the customer,” said Duane Hendricks, Egan Company Chief Operating Officer. “On completion of the project, we found that integration of all specialty trades was an advantage we were glad to have experienced ourselves.”

The 180,000 square foot facility comes in addition to Egan’s company headquarters in Brooklyn Park, Minn. and its Southern Minnesota offices in Rochester and Austin. It has increased the size of Egan’s shops, including:

  • InterClad curtainwall and metal panels fabrication –  30% more floor space with 50% more capacity
  • U.L. 508A Panel Shop – doubled in size
  • Electrical fabrication – tripled in size
  • Garage – two and a half times the size of previous location

Tools and warehouse – tripled in size and now have more loading docks for shipping and receiving
Space updates include the addition of collaborative workspaces and training rooms that can seat up to 100 people. Flexibility for extending the timeline created additional space for potential future expansion – an open 9,000 square feet for office space growth, as well as an additional 18,000 square feet for shop expansion in the future.

“This was a large undertaking we’re proud we were able to complete,” said Hendricks “This is the uniqueness of Egan… the ability to not only renovate a large manufacturing plant to specifically fit our needs, but to also successfully integrate systems within our own space. We’re very proud of this single-source offering.”

DSC_0041The decision to buy the manufacturing plant was made not only to meet growing needs, but also in order to provide customers with a more seamless delivery and overall experience, starting with Egan’s Tom Buirge – the construction manager who was appointed the ‘single point’ on behalf of all trades on the renovation project. Having an Egan project leader coordinating all trades helped ensure deadlines were enforced, but also created flexibility with timelines.

“What was great was working with Tom [Buirge] and the access he had to the project decision makers,” said Chris Ruhl, Egan Company Mechanical Field Leader. “We received immediate feedback when changes were needed so we could maintain our schedule.”

Ultimately, this consolidation/expansion serves to further strengthen Egan’s offerings as a single-source for specialty trades and systems integration.

“We have been able to bring many of our teams together, making collaborative work easier all around,” said Jim Malecha, Egan Company President & CEO. “Coming together in a larger space opens up all kinds of possibilities and, all-in-all, has benefited all facets of our business.”

Egan’s Specialty trades work Performed:

  • Mechanical: demolition of plumbing and HVAC, removal and replacement of 12 existing rooftop units with three larger units, renovation of existing air piping, installation of air piping in new shops, rework of air systems for garage.
  • Electrical: lighting and power for the build out warehouse space, natural gas generator, installation of new office fixtures as LED lighting.
  • Curtainwall/Glass/Glazing: new interior and exterior signs, window repair, bathroom mirrors, and glass walls.
  • Millwrights: installation of new bridge crane, relocation of all new/existing shop equipment, and all new/existing material/equipment racking.
  • Building Technology Integration: building automation system, fire alarm, card access, CCTV, intrusion security, paging, sound masking, voice/data/fiber optic, video intercom, projectors and screens, audio/visual.

Mechanical Shops Expansion

Over 70 years ago, Egan Company began as a plumbing and heating contractor. The sheet metal trade was added in 1958. Since this era, Egan has invested in its fabrication shops to provide fast delivery of custom-built mechanical systems to its customers.
With the advent of Virtual Construction practices, investment in fabrication shops has become even more important to the industry. When properly implemented by the entire project team, Virtual Construction allows Egan to “manufacture” piping, plumbing, and sheet metal components in its shops-under ideal conditions and with great efficiency. These components can be stored away from the jobsite and delivered just-in-time for field erection. The result: a lower cost building built over a shorter schedule.MechShop_0047

With the recent relocation of the warehouse and service garage functions to its new Champlin facility, Egan acted on the opportunity to expand and renovate its mechanical fabrication shops for increased productivity while also creating a safer environment for employees.

“Any task we can perform in our facility, under controlled conditions rather than on the jobsite, is a win for our customers,” said Mark Habermann, Egan Company Manufacturing Manager. “We’ve expanded our shops with the purpose of integrating all shops into one . . . we opened walls to promote the sharing of resources and foster collaboration across all trades.”

Trades served by the expanded shop space include sheet metal, piping, plumbing, and millwrights.

Virtual Flight Ride Experience Takes Flight at MOA

FOA Admissions CounterA brief vacation awaits you at the Mall of America where you can now view some of the country’s most breathtaking locales at the mall’s newest attraction, FlyOver America.

A ride like FlyOver America requires complex controls, equipment, and a lot of moving parts. “Everything has to communicate with each other … it’s like a symphony of many devices working in concert with each other to make the ride work as a whole,” said Elliott Olson, Egan Company Project Manager.

There’s more to the attraction than meets the eye, or the ear, or—the nose. Partnering with Mortenson Construction and FlyOver America Ltd., Egan Company installed the special effects devices that transform FlyOver America from a complex flight simulator into a true virtual flight experience with custom scents, wind, and even mist to tantalize riders’ senses during their 10-minute adventure.

Multiple trades within Egan were able to work in tandem to provide a cohesive experience for the customer that included installation of A/V equipment, communications and data wiring, and electrical power to the ride.

“We covered the work of four or five individual subcontractors on this project,” said Olson, “I think it’s a perfect example of what sets Egan apart from others.”

The ride itself is comprised of three levels, making navigation a unique challenge that required good planning, communication, and coordination among project teams.

Egan’s work on the project began in November 2015 and the ride officially opened on April 6, 2016. Even with the challenges posed by the project, Egan Company was able to deliver multiple scopes on a one-of-a-kind project.

“Working with the Egan team was fantastic,” said Eric Sambell, FlyOver America Ltd., Director, Construction & Technology. “It was great having one point of contact with Elliott Olson who was then able to communicate any changes to others on the team.”

Filling the Minneapolis Skyline

Look at the Minneapolis skyline and it becomes obvious: the construction industry is booming. New office buildings, high-rise apartments, sports arenas, and hotels are popping up all over Downtown Minneapolis. And in one small block off South Fourth Street and South Marquette Avenue on Nicollet Mall, Egan Company’s InterClad team has completed three major projects since 2014: Nic on Fifth Apartments, 4Marq Apartments, and Xcel Energy @ 401 Nicollet.

Completed in August 2014, the Nic on Fifth is the first high-rise luxury apartment development in downtown Minneapolis in nearly three decades. With world-class amenities and sleek architecture, this building offers premium Minneapolis hospitality. As a bonus, the building also features a variety of sustainable elements giving it LEED Silver Certification.
Egan’s InterClad team provided a variety of aesthetic features to this 300,000 square foot, 26-story luxury apartment complex. Installations included exterior windows and aluminum-glazed curtainwall, as well as some interior storefronts, glass handrails, and miscellaneous glass and mirrors.

“The timeline on this project was challenging because the winter of 2013 was rough,” said Paul Rudell, InterClad Senior Project Manager. “We were dealing with the Polar Vortex during this time, so there were some construction delays.”

Despite the weather challenges, this project was still completed in time for residents to move in September 2014.

As InterClad’s largest metal panel job ever completed to date, the 30-story 4Marq Apartments make an impressive addition to the downtown Minneapolis landscape. InterClad’s portion of the work was completed in November 2015, and 4Marq is currently leasing apartments.

On the first six floors of the building, Egan’s InterClad team engineered, fabricated, and installed perforated metal parking garage panels, corrugated screen wall panels, and flush seam ribbon panels. On the remaining 24 stories, metal panels were mounted on the corners of the building.

“The most challenging part of this project was the level of detail in each architectural element,” said InterClad Project Manager Todd Fechner. “The perforated metal parking garage panels had a very specific design that we had to engineer, fabricate, and install exactly to specifications.”

A total of 843 panels standing at 9.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide were prefabricated in InterClad’s shop.
“The building had three different colors of metal panels, and two of the colors were very similar, so it made it difficult to tell between the two at times,” said Troy Doble, InterClad Shop Manager.

Though the prefabrication did make installation easier, a color and pattern was agreed upon in advance of installation, so Egan’s InterClad team had to pay close attention to detail when installing each individual panel.

“It was a challenge keeping the perforated metal panels in the proper order, but with good planning from everyone on the team, the finished product looked great,” said Tad Hitchings, InterClad Project Foreman.

Located directly across from Xcel Energy’s corporate headquarters, a new nine-story building is currently under construction. The building will provide Xcel with an impressive two-building campus, and features a contemporary architectural design that reflects the style of surrounding buildings.

Egan’s InterClad team is providing curtainwall, metal panels, storefront interior glazing, interior waterfall glass, hand rails, and glass/glazing.

The overarching challenge with this project has been limited space to work, causing the team to have to think creatively about how to install the various elements.

“We have limited access to the street, so everyone on the job works in the same small area,” said Mike Kush, InterClad Project Foreman. “It requires coordinating work schedules, but Opus has been great to work with, especially with this challenge.”

Due to a lack of space on the ground to store large equipment and machinery, the team performs all glass installation and glazing while standing inside the building. To accomplish this, all materials were prefabricated in the InterClad shop and then delivered to the jobsite, with the exception of the glass glazed in the field.

“There’s virtually no storage on the ground in downtown Minneapolis, so prefabrication is essential to the success of our projects,” Rudell said.

In addition to work on the exterior of the new building, Egan’s InterClad team is also providing glass for a skyway system that connects Xcel Energy’s existing corporate headquarters across the street to the new building.

InterClad’s work will be done in March 2016, and the building is slated for occupancy in July 2016.

Three Projects, One Block Downtown

Working in a busy downtown setting does present some challenges. Lack of ground storage is a major problem, but traffic can also be challenging in a downtown setting. Many roads and sidewalks are closed around the jobsites for safety. And often material and equipment deliveries can only be scheduled during a set timeframe.

“Overall, the downtown area has been good to us the past few years,” said Egan Company Senior Vice President Tim Woolworth. “These three projects on this block showcase the diversity in our work and capabilities. We’re looking forward to working on another block in Minneapolis soon.”

Intelligent Building Consulting Firm Joins Egan

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (February 19, 2016) – Specialty trade contractor Egan Company announces the asset acquisition of intelligent building consulting firm TekNecks based in Minneapolis, Minn. TekNecks offers varied information technology services to commercial properties.

“TekNecks and Egan have a long history of working together,” said Michael Kohn, former TekNecks owner. “I’m excited to continue to develop our unique systems of technology delivery and network management and present these offerings to current and new customers. This ‘joining of forces’ is a natural fit. Both Egan and TekNecks have an opportunity to expand our services together and experience great growth.”

With the merger, Egan Company will continue to be a leader in the intelligent building and information technology industry in the Twin Cities. “TekNecks expands Egan’s intelligent building services, and offers a specific service that Egan wasn’t able to deliver before,” said Jeff Hawthorne, Egan Company Senior Vice President. “TekNecks will help us offer complete property management and IT network services – from conception to completion, and we have eliminated the need for customers to hire multiple contractors for maintenance.”

TekNecks’ three employees will office within Egan Company’s Brooklyn Park, Minn. facility, but will maintain the TekNecks presence in Downtown Minneapolis.

A Tradition of Paying it Forward

So much is changing in the construction industry, but some values never quite lose their luster. Notions like family, community, and charity, for example, are as prevalent today as they were in 1945 when Egan Company was founded.

For the past 70 years, Egan has been actively involved in the community by rallying employees to support generous causes, and the first half of 2015 was no different as employees collaborated with Twin Cities-based Hearts & Hammers for the thirteenth time and participated once again in a local food-packing competition through the non-profit, Matter.

“Remodel” is a word that gets thrown around a lot at Egan. Usually, it pertains to a commercial project. But last May, Egan employees partnered with Hearts & Hammers for a different kind of remodel; one that would transform the house of an elderly Minneapolis resident.

There were more than 40 Egan employees in attendance, including Egan Leaders, and field and office personnel. We spent the morning and afternoon fixing up and repainting the house. The house had survived years of wear-and-tear, including a fire on the front porch years ago.

“This year was one of the first that we’ve had an all-Egan team, so it was great to see everyone participate and work together to help out someone in need,” said Jim Malecha, Egan Company President & CEO.

A fresh coat of paint took off years from the house and garage’s façade, and the backyard is now transformed with an all-new walking path, a reinforced deck, and a neat little sitting area inside a newly refurbished garden.

“I’ve been here 47 years and I just can’t believe it’s my house,” said Katherine, homeowner.

DSC_0497Packing Meals for Healthy Competition

A food-packing competition was held through Matter, a local nonprofit, to support local children and families in need of nutritious meals.

Eight teams of Egan employees raced to pack meals, and the competition was fierce, with teams rushing to arrange and seal boxes as quickly as possible within a time limit. When the final tallies were counted, the winning team came out on top after packing 81 total boxes.

“This event was for a good cause to help provide food for kids in food deserts in the Twin Cities,” said Nick Ravetto, Egan Company Safety Coordinator. “It also brought together people at Egan for a great team-building event.”

Ninety-five Egan employees attended the event and packed 695 boxes, which amounted to 3,475 meals. Quenton Marty, President of Matter, said the boxes Egan packed would provide over a week and half of meals to students in local free lunch programs.

The group (and individual) efforts of Egan volunteers have been a lasting source of pride throughout all seventy years of the company’s existence. Each day brings more opportunities, and each day we hope to continue our rich tradition of supporting the local community.

Compressed Schedule Calls for Cross-Trade Coordination

lakes_internationalThe side-effects of the deluge of rain we received this last spring are still being felt today. On top of flooding and lake closures, there was a direct impact on construction projects that had to push back start dates because of wet soil.

New building construction for the Lakes International Language Academy (LILA) adopted an aggressive new timeline to combat this obstacle. The K-6 charter school looked to build upon the success of its tuition-free immersion program (Spanish or Chinese) that follows an accredited International Baccalaureate Primary Years curriculum in the form of a new facility.

The rain, while good for flowers, turned the work site into a challenge. The foundation’s soil turned to soft clay, making for a less-than-ideal work environment. In fact, a concrete composite had to be mixed into areas where soil integrity was most vulnerable, effectively turning the school’s new parking lot into a great big cinder block.

highres_lakes_smallerEgan’s Electrical, Mechanical, and Building Systems & Services groups partnered with general contractor Kraus-Anderson to find a way to get the job done on time.

Collaboration between Egan and Kraus-Anderson’s Project Manager Jake Boerboon and Superintendent Jesse Fiskewold were essential to project success. Even closer coordination was required than is customary for a project like this. Potentials for lost-time or further delays were addressed and resolved before the fact, creating an extremely well-organized work model.

Design/Build was also a huge factor in facilitating the accelerated timeline. Thanks to Egan doing the design and construction, many issues were resolved before they could reach the field. Without this, on-site problem solving would be a necessity and could have delayed the project further.

The construction team benefited greatly from prefabrication on this project. Circuits and feeders were crafted in-house and pre-assembly of the duct helped reduce installation time in the field. Close coordination between mechanical and electrical also minimized penetrations in the precast and allowed coordination of hanger systems, nearly cutting the initial estimate time in half.

Egan also supplied the academy’s building automation system. The weather delay shortened the installation timeframe significantly, requiring work to be completed in about a week.

The project finished on time, giving the school about two weeks to furnish and organize the building to be student-ready for the Fall.

The Lakes International Language Academy Project is a newly constructed, 43,000 square foot, two-story facility that included two parking lots and a gymnasium. The building’s automation system included integrating seven Lennox RTUs, installing controls on VAV boxes, and interlocking the kitchen make up unit with miscellaneous exhaust fans.
