20 Questions with our CEO James Ford

This spring, we welcomed James Ford into the role of President & Chief Executive Officer, following recently retired Duane Hendricks’ leadership succession. Previously, James served as both President and Chief Financial Officer. He also joined the Board of Directors in 2017. We sat down with James for a little “20 Questions” to get to know him better.

In one statement, what do you do at Egan? 

“Create teams with a focus on long-term success”

What’s your favorite part about working at Egan? 

“Hands down…..it’s our amazing people.”

What unique skills or strengths do you bring to your role? 

“I have a natural tendency to be focused on the future, which leads me to be curious and ask a lot of questions about what we should do next, how we can accomplish it, and who can help us.”

When you aren’t at work, what do you enjoy spending your free time doing? 

“I love to play golf and spend time on the water with my family.”

What advice would you have for future leaders in the industry? 

“You will likely master the technical skills you need fairly early in your career; then invest your time in learning how to communicate effectively, ask great questions, build relationships, create consensus, and how to see things from someone else’s point of view.”

What is the most memorable moment you had with a client or customer in the last 20 years? 

“I enjoy meeting with customers when we don’t have an active project with them because then the conversations are less about the current situation and are more focused on how we can build a better long-term relationship with them.”

What’s your educational background look like? 

“Bachelor of Science in Accounting from North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.”

What’s one word you would use to describe the Egan team? 

“Resilient”

If your life was a movie, what genre would it be? 

“Action with some comedy.”

What’s your favorite Minnesota season? 

“Summer”

What’s your favorite way to stay active? 

“Walking 18 holes”

How many years of industry experience do you have? 

“If you count my early years helping my dad install flooring, it would be 30 years of experience. Professionally I have been working with contractors for 22 years.”

Where is your hometown?

“Moorhead, Minnesota”

Best vacation you’ve ever been on? 

“Maui”

What was your first job? 

“I worked the meat counter at a grocery store”

What’s the best part of your work day? 

“Connecting with individual team members”

EGAN COMPANY APPOINTS JAMES FORD TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (December 5, 2017) – Egan Company, a Brooklyn Park specialty contractor, announced James Ford, Chief Financial Officer, has been appointed to the Egan Company Board of Directors.

“James’ experience and background in finance is invaluable to Egan, our employees, and our customers,” said Jim Malecha, Egan Company President & CEO. “He provides unique insight and expertise in strategic management and will be a great addition to our board.”

Ford joined Egan Company as Chief Financial Officer in February after 15 years in public accounting. He provides leadership overseeing Egan’s accounting, human resources, and legal functions, as well as acts as an advisor to all lines of business. Additionally, Ford is on the Board of Directors for Minnesota-based nonprofit, Dads Make a Difference.

Ford joins four other members on Egan’s board, including Jim Malecha, outgoing President and Chief Executive Officer, Duane Hendricks, Chief Operating Officer/incoming President & CEO, Tim Woolworth, Senior Vice President, and Jim Nonn, Chief Information Officer.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal highlighted Ford’s promotion in its People on the Move feature.

Egan Company Names New Chief Financial Officer

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (February 6, 2017) – Egan Company, a Brooklyn Park specialty contractor, has named its new chief financial officer.

The privately-owned company, which has its local operations in the Twin Cities and Southern Minnesota, hired local financial leader James Ford. Ford will serve as Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the financial functions within Egan and acting as an adviser to all lines of business.

Ford joins Egan after more than 15 years in public accounting working as Business Partner with Eide Bailly LLP providing accounting, audit, tax, and consulting services to clients in various industries. Additionally, he has served as a department leader and has experience in strategic planning, succession planning, and educating others on utilizing business metrics as a way to improve operations and performance.

“We are excited to have someone of James’ caliber join us at Egan,” said Jim Malecha, Egan Company President and CEO. “Not only does James have the technical skills and knowledge to succeed as CFO, he also has a dynamic personality that fits our culture and will integrate well with our business groups and leadership team.”

Ford received his bachelor of science in accounting from North Dakota State University and is a Certified Public Accountant. He also volunteers as a board member for Minnesota-based nonprofit, Dads Make a Difference.

Ford succeeds Jim Johnson, who will retire this spring after 14 years as Egan Company Chief Financial Officer.
