- In response to a critical service issue impacting production, Egan Company supported Steris with emergency repairs to two chamber doors at its Coon Rapids facility. Chambers 11 and 22 had developed significant warping in door surfaces, preventing proper sealing and halting the start-up and validation process.
- The sterilization chambers, which have undergone routine steam heat cycling, pressurization, and vacuum processes for nearly 50 years, caused the large, composite steel doors—measuring approximately 5’ wide by 8’ tall and weighing 1,500 lbs. each—to bow over time and lose the ability to seal.
- As Steris’s on-site contracting partner, Egan was called upon to coordinate an immediate solution. A plan was quickly developed to machine the interior faces of the chamber doors to restore a flat, sealing surface. Egan millwrights and pipefitters provided critical support throughout the process—managing logistics, preparing the jobsite, and coordinating with a specialized machining subcontractor to mobilize equipment and begin work without delay.
- The subcontractor quickly mobilized to the site and the team—working in 12-hour shifts for seven consecutive days—machined each door to within 0.030” of flatness corner-to-corner and along all four edges.
- Once reinstalled, the repaired doors passed validation and were returned to service—allowing Steris to resume operations with minimal disruption to their production timeline and customer obligations.
